Indian Institute of Technology Ropar- Assistant Professor Grade-I/II Recruitment

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar invites applications from qualified and motivated candidates for the post of Assistant Professor Grade-I/II in the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering (AIDE) of the institute.


Applicants will be considered for either Grade-I or Grade-II depending on the eligibility and suitability. The applications shall be screened and the shortlisted candidates shall be asked to appear for a Teaching / Research seminar at IIT Ropar. The recommended candidates shall be subsequently invited for an interview at IIT Ropar.

Reservations: As per Government of India norms.

Qualified persons include:

  • Indian Nationals;
  • Foreign Nationals, who are Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), in whose case if selected, permission will be sought from the Government of India before he/she can join the institute;
  • Other Foreign Nationals in whose case if selected, an appointment will be made on a contract basis upto 5 years subject to the grant of permission from the Government of India before he/she can join the institute.


Assistant Professor Grade-I

Ph.D. with first class or equivalent at the preceding degree in the appropriate branch with a very good academic record throughout.

A minimum of three years post Ph.D. teaching / research / professional experience, excluding the experience gained while pursuing Ph.D. Candidate should have demonstrated research capabilities in terms of publications in reputed journals and conferences.

Scale of Pay: Pay Level 12 (Rs. 101500-167400) with a basic pay of Rs.1,01,500/- per month. On completion of 3 years of service as Assistant Professor Grade I with Academic Level 12, would be eligible for movement to Academic Level 13A1 (Rs. 131400-204700) with a basic pay of Rs.1,31,400/- per month subject to satisfactory performance and on the recommendations of an Assessment Committee.

Assistant Professor Grade II

Candidates satisfying all criteria other than the post PhD experience criteria for Assistant Professor Grade I, may be appointed as Assistant Professor Grade II with appropriate pay based on post­doctoral experience. At the entry level they may be placed in Academic Level 10 (Rs.57700-98200) with basic pay of Rs.70900/- per month and shall move to Academic Level 11 after completion of 1 year post Ph.D. experience (basic pay of Rs.84800/- per month) and 2 years (basic pay of Rs. 87300/-per month). On completion of minimum experience requirement and satisfactory performance in teaching and research and on the recommendations of an Assessment Committee, they may be moved to Assistant Professor Grade I in Academic Level 12.

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, an Institute of national importance, is one of the eight IITs set up by the Government of India, Ministry of Education (earlier Ministry of Human Resource Development), in 2008.   • Medical Coverage: Members of the faculty and their dependent family members, may use facilities and services available in its on-campus dispensary. In addition to the Medical Care facilities provided in the institute dispensary, the patients whenever required are referred to other dispensaries and empanelled hospitals in and around Ropar / Chandigarh / Mohali. The expenses incurred on such treatment are reimbursed as per CGHS rates.
  • Leave Travel Concession: As with other Government employees, members of the faculty are entitled to “Leave Travel Concession”, wherein the institute underwrites the travel expense to one’s Home Town every year for the first eight years of service as per Govt. of India LTC rules. This travel support is provided to all dependent family members as well.
  • Relocation Expenses: The Institute will reimburse expenses incurred by a faculty to travel to join IIT Ropar from the place of duty/residence to IIT Ropar and back by the shortest route. Reimbursement of expenses (digital payment only) incurred on travel by him / her and for the dependent family members and for transportation of household goods will be as under:
  • Faculty joining within India – As per GoI Travelling Allowance norms
  • Faculty joining from abroad – Actual expenditure or Rs. 1.5 lakhs whichever is less Tickets should be booked by only three governments authorized travel agents viz. M/s Balmer Lawrie & Company Limited, M/s Ashok Travels & Tours Limited and Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation. Ltd. (IRCTC).
  • Depending upon the qualification and experience, a higher start / salary can be offered in deserving cases.
  • Reimbursement of telephone bills ranging from `1200/- to `2700/- p.m. as per institute
  • A Cumulative Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) of `00 lac for every block period of 3 years (Rupees one lac per year) is made available to every year member of the faculty on reimbursable basis to meet the expenses for participation in national and international conferences, payment of membership fee of professional bodies and contingent expenses for any other professional activity.
  • No limit on attending the International Conferences without Institute financial assistance.
  • Accommodation: The Institute endeavours to provide suitable accommodation to all faculty. However, initially new faculty may stay in Guest House / Visitors Hostel for the period and on prescribed rates as per the institute norms.
  • The Institute encourages interaction of the faculty with industry, other research and professional institutions. Consultancy is encouraged at IIT Ropar and liberal consultancy policies are in practice.
  • Professional visits can be undertaken during vacation period for carrying out scientific research work.
  • Facilities for Research and Development activities exist in all the Departments. These are being continuously modernized with contemporary equipment and services. Good central facilities also exist for computing and research. The Institute has a well stocked library.
  • Start up grant: A suitable start up grant will be available for the faculty members for a sum of upto Rs.20.00 lac to set up the research and infrastructural facilities for a maximum period of 03 years.
  • Most of the day-to-day facilities are available on the Campus including banks, post office, crèche for children, well equipped dispensary, sports facilities, cafeteria etc.


  • Permanent faculty positions are open to Indian Nationals, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). Appointment of foreign nationals for fixed period not exceeding 5 years on contract basis is permissible.
  • Political and security clearance from Ministries of External Affairs and Home Affairs is necessary in every case for individuals with foreign passports.
