In addition, candidates must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or CSIR, or a similar UGC-accredited test such as SLET/SET, or must hold a Ph.D. degree awarded as per UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016, which exempts them from the NET/SLET/SET requirement. Alternatively, candidates with a Ph.D. from a foreign university or institution ranked among the top 500 in the QS, THE, or ARWU World University Rankings are also eligible.

Desirable: Candidates having a Ph.D. in the relevant branch or specialization shall be preferred.
