Job Description: Senior Accountant

lob Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring statutory compliance, maintaining accurate financial records, and supporting audits within the educational institution. The role requires strong knowledge of accounting principles, regulatory requirements, and financial reporting specific to academic environments.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Management
- Maintain books of accounts including general ledger, cash book, bank book, and journal entries
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Handle student fee accounting, scholarships, concessions, and refunds
- Ensure accurate accounting of grants, donations, and institutional funds
- Monitor budgets and support variance analysis
Statutory Compliance
- Ensure timely compliance with statutory requirements such as GST, Income Tax (TDS), PF, ESI, and other applicable regulations
- Prepare and file statutory returns, challans, and reconciliations
- Support statutory and internal audits by providing required schedules and documentation
Payroll & Vendor Management
- Process payroll accounting, salary payments, reimbursements, and statutory deductions
- Verify vendor invoices, purchase bills, and expense vouchers
- Coordinate with vendors for payment processing and reconciliation
Banking & Reconciliation
- Prepare and review bank reconciliations
- Monitor cash flow and fund utilization
- Maintain proper controls over receipts, payments, and advances
Fixed Assets & Inventory
- Maintain fixed asset registers and ensure capitalization and depreciation accounting
- Conduct periodic asset and inventory verification
Audit & Documentation
- Assist internal and external auditors during audits
- Maintain financial records, audit support documents, and regulatory filings
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies and accounting standards
Process Improvement
- Support implementation and improvement of accounting systems and ERP modules
- Recommend process improvements and strengthen internal controls
- Assist in drafting and updating finance-related SOPs and policies
Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce / Accounting / Finance
- Professional qualification such as CA Inter, CMA Inter, or MBA (Finance) preferred
Experience Required
- Minimum 4 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in an educational institution, trust, or non-profit organization
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and statutory compliances
- Proficiency in MS Excel, accounting software, and ERP systems
- Good understanding of education sector accounting practices
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Good communication and coordination skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
