Event End Date: 23-07-2025
FDP Mode: Online
FDP Organizing Department: School of S&H (Mathematics Stream) and Dept. of CSE
About FDP:
This refresher course is designed to provide an interdisciplinary introduction to the fields of network science and network security, catering to faculty members, researchers, and professionals from computer science, mathematics, electronics, and related disciplines. It offers participants a mathematical foundation, practical exposure, and awareness of ongoing research trends in each of these domains. The course will be enriched with lectures, hands-on sessions, case studies, and discussions on current research trends, equipping participants with both conceptual knowledge and technical skills applicable to academia, research, and industry. The course will foster participants’ interdisciplinary thinking and promote collaborative research opportunities in emerging areas of network science and security.
In the area of network security, the course focuses on the growing challenges associated with securing computer systems, networks, and cloud infrastructures. This component highlights real-world threats and defense mechanisms relevant to today’s computing environments.
Topics to be covered are system-level security, such as endpoint protection, malware analysis, and operating system vulnerabilities. Security issues arising from virtualization, multi-tenancy, and data privacy in cloud computing will also be covered. Network-related concerns, including intrusion detection and prevention, denial-of-service attacks, spoofing, firewalls, and traffic monitoring, will also be discussed. The Network Science component of the course introduces participants to the theoretical and practical aspects of analyzing complex networks, which are central to understanding systems in communication, social interactions, biology, and infrastructure. Participants will learn about different network models, including small-world and scale-free networks, and explore dynamic processes such as the spread of information or disease, influence propagation, and failure cascades. For practical exposure, participants will be guided through hands-on demonstrations of tools and software relevant to network security as well as network science platforms.

About Institution:
Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing Kancheepuram (IIITDM Kancheepuram) is a Centre of Excellence for technical education and research established in 2007 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India to pursue design and manufacturing oriented engineering education and research and to promote the competitive advantage of Indian products in global markets.
It is one of the two IIITDMs, the other one being located in Jabalpur. The institute, which was operating from its temporary campus within the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, which was also its mentor institute, has moved to its permanent campus at Kelambakkam-Vandalur road near Chennai in 2011. The institute offers academic and research programs that integrate engineering design, manufacturing and management with information technology. The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs which focus on IT, design and manufacturing in engineering sectors.
The institute is located on a 51 acre campus on the outskirts of Chennai, off the Vandalur-Kelambakkam road. It is a fully residential campus with all students residing within the campus. The campus houses the academic block, the administrative block, lecture hall complex and laboratory block.
The Institute is presently offering B.Tech programmes in Computer Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering (Design & Manufacturing) and Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing), 5 Dual Degree Programmes leading to B.Tech and M.Tech Degrees, M.Des in Electronic Systems Design, Communication Systems Design, Mechanical Systems Design and inter-disciplinary Ph.D programmes in core and applied areas of engineering. From the academic year 2016, the Institute will introduce the B.Tech Mechanical (Smart Manufacturing). The faculty members of the Institute are also involved in sponsored and consultancy research projects from reputed industries and government organisations.
