Required Assistant Professor (1 No) on Contract Basis for TISS-ECI MA programme at the Centre of Electoral Management Studies, School of Development Studies at TISS Mumbai campus

The School of Development Studies (SDS) was created in 2012 to contribute towards the holistic discussion on the politics and practices of development and democracy in post-colonial societies. Focusing on the interconnection between global, national and local processes of social change, the vision of the School is to promote diverse ways of interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity in the generation of social science knowledge and to actively engage with critical issues of development, democracy, governance, poverty, and equity through excellence in research, teaching and advocacy.

The Centre invites application for one post (1 No) of Assistant Professor to be filled on contract basis, initially for a period of one year and extendable based on performance of the candidate and requirements of the MA program and the Institute.

The candidates will be required to teach in the recently launched Master’s in International Electoral Management and Practices program of TISS (supported by Election Commission of India), coordinate with national and international faculty, assist fieldwork activities of the students, provide mentorship to students who need assistance for internship and placement, supervise assessment, guide Masters’ research dissertation, support administration of MA program and carry out other academic, research for the centre of electoral management studies, facilitate various capacity building activities for effective delivery of the MA programs of the school of the development studies. Persons are expected to be trained in the comparative perspectives of teaching theories and practices of Democracy, Elections, Electoral Sociology, Anthropology of Elections, Political Behavior and Mass Politics, Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and Management of Elections, Electoral Administration, Human Resource Management with the prior experience on working in these areas and among other things.

Remuneration: Basic Pay of Rs. 57700/- (Level 10 as per 7 CPC)

Eligibility Criteria:

Educational Qualification: Eligibility (A or B):

A.

  1. A Master’s degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed) in Political Science/ Human Resource Management/Elections Studies/Electoral Management/ Electoral Sociology/ Anthropology of Elections from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
  2. Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, or a similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET or who are or have been awarded a Ph. D. degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 and their amendments from time to time as the case may be exempted from NET/SLET/SET:

Provided, the candidates registered for the Ph.D. programme prior to July 11, 2009, shall be governed by the provisions of the then existing Ordinances/Bye-laws/Regulations of the Institution awarding the degree and such Ph.D. candidates shall be exempted from the requirement of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of ‘Assistant Professor’ subject to the or equivalent positions in Universities/Colleges/Institutions fulfilment of the following conditions: –

  1. The Ph.D. degree of the candidate has been awarded in a regular mode;
  2. The Ph.D. thesis has been evaluated by at least two external examiners;
  3. An open Ph.D. viva voce of the candidate has been conducted;
  4. The Candidate has published two research papers from his/her Ph.D. work, out of which at least one is in a referred journal;
  5. The candidate has presented at least two papers based on his/her Ph.D. work in conferences/seminars sponsored/funded/supported by the UGC/ICSSR/CSIR or any similar

The fulfilment of these conditions is to be certified by the Registrar or the Dean (Academic Affairs) of the University concerned.

Note: NET/SLET/SET shall also not be required for such Masters Programmes in disciplines for which NET/SLET/SET is not conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET.

OR

B. The Ph.D. degree has been obtained from a foreign university/institution with a ranking among top 500 in the World University Ranking (at any time) by any one of the following:

  1. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
  2. the Times Higher Education (THE) or
  • the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • D. in Political Science / Human Resource Management/ Sociology or Anthropology with the with the focus on Electoral Behavior, Management of Elections, Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and Management of Elections with the prior experience of working on these areas.
  • Candidates with prior teaching/research experience of two years and/or the experience of development of curriculum in areas of electoral management or Human Resource Management with the focus on organizational behavior will be preferred.
  • Candidates with the experience of working with Election Commission of India, capacity building of election officials and election management bodies (EMB’s)
  • Research and published work in peer-reviewed journals in the relevant fields.

The application fee for SC/ST/PWD candidates will be Rs. 250/- if they attach the required certificate to the online application form. The women applicants are waived from payment of application fees. The application will be valid only on receipt of the application fee if applicable. Fees once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.

Other Conditions:

  • The Institute reserves the right to relax the qualifications of the candidate based on the work experience and to relax age in the case of persons already holding comparable positions in a University/Research Institution of repute.
  • The Institute reserves the right to invite persons for interviews who may not have applied as per the above procedure and not fill up the vacancy advertised.
  • Since applications received may be short-listed, merely possessing the prescribed qualifications and the requisite experience would not entitle a person to be called for the

Original certificates will be verified only for the selected candidate at the time of appointment.
