Position: Student Counsellor & Wellness Teacher

Qualifications

  • Graduate / Postgraduate in Psychology, Child Development
  • Desirable:
    • Diploma in Career Guidance and Counselling.
    • Experience as a School Counsellor in a CBSE/recognized school.
    • Training in child and adolescent mental health, life skills, and career guidance.

Role Purpose

To promote the social, emotional, behavioural, and academic well-being of students; provide counselling and guidance services; support a safe, inclusive school environment; and act as the nodal person for wellness initiatives in line with CBSE guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Student Counselling & Support

  1. Provide individual and group counselling to students on emotional, behavioural, social, and academic concerns (e.g., stress, anxiety, peer issues, self-esteem, adjustment difficulties).
  2. Identify students at risk and provide early intervention, referrals, and follow-up support.
  3. Maintain a confidential, student-friendly counselling environment.

Wellness, Life Skills & Awareness

  • Plan and conduct age-appropriate life skills, mental health, and wellness sessions (classes/assemblies/workshops) as per CBSE guidelines.
  • Organise awareness programmes on topics such as exam stress management, online safety, substance abuse prevention, bullying prevention, and emotional resilience.

Academic, Behavioural & Career Guidance

  • Support students in setting academic goals, managing study habits, and overcoming learning-related stress.
  • Work with teachers to understand behavioural issues in class and suggest strategies for classroom management and support.
  • Provide basic career guidance, help students understand subject choices (especially at secondary/senior secondary levels), and refer to specialised career guidance resources when needed.

Collaboration with Teachers & Parents

  • Regularly consult with teachers to monitor student behaviour, performance, and well-being, and develop joint support plans.
  • Conduct parent meetings, orientations, and workshops on parenting, adolescent issues, and supporting children’s mental health.
  • Act as a liaison between school, family, and external mental health professionals, when referrals are required.

Policy, Prevention & School Climate

  • Assist the Principal in implementing CBSE guidelines on safety, child protection, POCSO awareness, anti-bullying, and inclusive practices.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of school policies on discipline, behaviour management, and emotional safety.
  • Support committees such as the School Safety Committee, Child Protection Committee, and Inclusion Team, as required.

Documentation & Confidentiality

  • Maintain proper, confidential records of counselling sessions, referrals, and interventions, in line with ethical standards and CBSE expectations.
  • Prepare periodic reports (without breaching confidentiality) on overall trends, needs, and recommended interventions for school leadership.

  • Excellent communication and listening skills with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues with maturity, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Collaborative mindset and readiness to work as part of a multidisciplinary school team.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time presence during school working hours and availability for scheduled parent interactions, workshops, staff meetings and any other requirements from Principal.
  • Participation in key school events, orientation programmes, and teacher training days, as required.
