Organization Profile: During the World War II India faced acute food shortages and to meet the exigencies a separate Food Department was established on 1st December 1942 under the Commerce Member of the Governor General’s Council. Following is the extract of note made by the first Secretary Food, Benjamin George Holdsworth, CIE, ICS, taken from the Home Department File No. 388/42-Public, wherein the proposal to issue a formal Resolution of the constitution of the new Department of Food by the Home department is dealt.

Qualification:
- (i) Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry or Master’s Degree in Chemistry with Organic Chemistry as one of the papers from a recognized University or Institute,
and
(ii) Five years’ experience of research work in Organic Chemistry or five years working experience in sugar factory or distillery or other related industrial units or five years teaching experience at degree level in Organic Chemistry or - (i) Doctorate degree in Chemistry from a recognized University or institute with essential qualification viz; Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry or Master’s Degree in Chemistry with Organic Chemistry as one of the papers from a recognized University or Institute; and
(ii) three years working experience in sugar factory or distillery or other related industrial units or three years teaching experience at degree level in Organic Chemistry.
