It was established as one of the seventeen Regional Engineering Colleges of India in the year 1961 as a joint enterprise of Government of India and Government of Uttar Pradesh, and was an associated college of University of Allahabad, which is the third oldest university in India.In the year 1972, the Institute initiated a self employment project and established an industrial estate with 68 sheds with the objective of encouraging entrepreneurs and creating additional employment avenues.The Institute was selected as a lead institution in the Design theme under Indo-UK REC Project . Under this scheme a Design Centre was established.The Institute has been selected as a Lead Institution under World Bank funded Government of India Project on Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme. Two state level institutions are networked with MNNIT under the project.

Qualification:
(i) For all Engineering Departments: First Class [60% Marks or GPA 6.5/10] Master’s degree in appropriate discipline of Engineering with first class [60% Marks or GPA 6.5/10] at Bachelor in Engineering stream (B.E./ B.Tech.). Preference will be given to PhD candidates.
(ii) For Humanities & Social Science Department: Doctorate in English / English Language Teaching / Communication & Social Sciences with first class [60% Marks or GPA 6.5 /10] at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
(iii) For School of Management Studies: MBA and Ph.D. (System Management/ Accounting & Financial Management) with first class [Minimum 60% Marks or 6.5 CPI on Scale] at both Bachelor’s and MBA level.
(iv) For Physics Department: Doctorate in Relevant Field with first class [60% Marks or (GPA 6.5 /10)] at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
Pay Scale:
- M. Tech in Engineering Ph.D. in Humanities/Science/Management In the range of Rs. 40,000/- to Rs.45,000/- per month (all inclusive)
- Ph.D. in Engineering In the range of Rs.50,000/-to Rs.55,000/- per month (all inclusive)
